RememberTo Give Your Garden Some Attention During Winter Months

By Ian Knight

Most gardens are overlooked and forgotten about in the colder winter months. It might be a little colder but it is the ideal time to get a great deal of preparation and groundwork done.

At this time of year there is a lot of clearing up to do. Rake up the fallen leaves as not only do they look scruffy, you can bag them to make some great quality compost for the following year. Weed your beds, dig out as many of the roots as possible or you will be seeing them again before you know it. If you have still got old annual and biannual plants in your beds, take them out and dispose of them now. To improve the quality of air and drainage in the soil, give it a good rake over once you have finished the weeding.

Shape and prune all of your treesand shrubs to smarten them up and get them ready for the growing season.

If you have been meaning to dig out some new beds, then the cold months are the best time to get this job done. Add some great quality compost or manure to the soil as soon as you have the chance, to give it time to break down and improve the soil before planting. Plants will grow bigger and better in well composted beds. If your garden has a veggie patch, it will also need to be dug over and prepared. You will be pleased this is ready when the frosts have gone and you want to get your vegetables in. Work around existing winter vegetables, as they will benefit too from some compost on the areas around them.

If you need some colour to improve the appearance of an outside space in winter, then visit your local garden centre for some inspiration. It is easy to ensure you have colour and interest in your garden throughout the year. There are a variety of gorgeous winter plants for you to choose from.

Winter Jasmine and Honeysuckle are both stunning shrubs which add colour and interest with their pretty display of blooms. Both the Holly with its deep red berry or the stunning Pyracantha are great choices. For a rich display of colour, try Crocus or Iris. There are many different Heathers in bloom at this time of year and they look effective when mixed together. For the best knowledge and information, seek the advice of a member of staff at a reputable garden centre.
